This is a project that documents a year in food. The following is all of the meals consumed from Jan 1st 2008 to Dec 31st 2008.
An explanation of how this project was started can be found here.
I’m fairly notorious for setting resolutions and backing out at some point along the way….usually shortly after starting
But this year will be different. Why you may ask, because I’m going to Tumbl their progress for documentation and accountability. I’ve also tried to change my mindset towards the resolutions by thinking of them more as projects instead of mandatory rules to live by. By allowing myself to venture through this as a project, should I find I’ve skipped a day or two on meeting my goal, I won’t feel the defeat or guilt of breaking a promise to myself. In the past I’ve reached this guilt wall and always walked away from it not having met my goal or not wanted to continue for fear of failure again. So, I’m taking failure out of the equation.
As for the resolutions…
1) I intend to take a picture of every meal I eat throughout the year with a little description. For instance, here’s what I had for lunch today:

The point of this project is to keep myself focused on what I put into my body and how it affects my overall physique, health, focus, and mood.
I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t have the healthiest diet. I love food, most of the time the wrong types. Most days consist of no breakfast*, fast food for lunch** , and some form of meat and potato for dinner. This is probably a typical meal for most Americans…probably attributes to that top 10 ranking (depending on the source) on the most obese countries.
2) Eating breakfast
I generally don’t eat a true breakfast. When I do eat in the morning, it usually consists of a pop tart or handful of cheese crackers. I think the trouble with this project is that I enjoy my sleep and usually like to stay sleeping until I absolutely have to be awake. These mornings I either wait until lunch or grab something out of the vending machine at work, neither option is healthy or very gratifying.
The goal is to at very least have a bowl of cereal or fruit each morning and avoid the dreaded vending machine or worse yet, hunger feeling.
3) Giving up fast food.
I eat fast food on average 6-7 times a week. This is really unhealthy and surprisingly expensive. Instead of quickly grabbing fast food and running back to work to eat at my desk, I’d like to start either bringing my lunch or even better, leaving and having a healthier lunch at home and actually taking a full lunch break.
4) Learn the lyrics to R.E.M’s “It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)”
This is a resolution that I’ve verbally announced each year for the last few years but have not even attempted. It’s by no means a life changing resolution, more about bragging rights. If, and that’s a huge if, I do learn this song word for word…how should I prove it? Is it something I should keep in my back pocket and just wish that someone’s with me while it comes on the radio….or should I proudly proclaim my achievement and perform it at karaoke….or should I upload a lip-dub to vimeo/youtube?
5) Upload content to JoshMerrill.com
I need to familiarize myself more with CSS and PHP to fully utilize the site the way I envision. If that means taking classes or buying and reading how-to books, I’m game
